Raise Your Helping Hand
We are a UK based non-profit organisation, supporting the remote and poverty-stricken village of Luhimba and surrounding areas in Southern Tanzania, East Africa since 1984.

Our Role
Our role has always been to work in partnership with the villagers to help them create their own sustainable solutions to the problems they face to alleviate poverty and suffering in order to create a better future for themselves and for future generations. Our relationship with the community is based on friendship, trust and mutual understanding.

Recent Causes
EDUCATION
When the project started there was one run-down primary school to serve the whole village. Some children had to walk miles to school. In the early 90’s the project worked with the villagers to refurbish the school, then to build two more primary schools. For those who qualify for further or higher education we help them with their fees. We have several students at university at the moment all around Tanzania.
CLEAN WATER
In the early days the villagers had little access to clean water. Untreated water was freely drunk, with consequent high rates of water-borne diseases, particularly amongst children. In 1984 Michael Carey raised funds for the first hand operated pump in the village. During the past year there has been a major breakthrough – electricity has reached the village via the national grid.
HEALTH
Luhimba is a very remote village and access to medical treatment in the 1970’s and 80’s was difficult. Diseases like malaria were rife. Life expectancy in those days was around 50. The project built a new clinic, The Angela Carey Dispensary in 1987 and appointed a full-time doctor, George Pallangyo. As well as a full-time doctor, the dispensary now has 4 nurses and a midwife.
